Saints Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs
“Give the word and let my servant be cured.”
Luke 7:1-10
We can imagine Jesus’s astonishment when he heard these words from the centurion working for the hated ruling Romans. He understood how authority worked and applied this experience to what Jesus could do for him. He believed Jesus could save his servant without actually going to him, by just giving his word, just as he got people under him to do his bidding.
No wonder Jesus had to exclaim: “Not even in Israel have I found faith like this!” And immediately the servant was cured. How often have we seen people from other faiths, other belief systems or even without belief at all, display qualities and virtues we who believe in Christ do not exhibit? Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest spiritual and political leaders, a Hindu, fascinated by the teachings of Jesus, went to a Christian Church in Calcutta but was turned away because that Church was for high castes and whites only; he was neither. He later declared: “I’d be a Christian if it were not for the Christians.”
Hmm. Food for thought!!!
