Friday September 13th: The blind leading the blind

Are we sighted enough spiritually to lead others, or are we in need of guidance ourselves?

Luke 6: 39 – 42

Jesus asks a rhetorical question: “Can one blind man guide another? Surely both will fall into a pit?”

It is not difficult to see the implications of the question. If the question is meant to make us think again about the kind of leaders we look up to, it is saying we ought to be discerning about whom we choose to follow. A blind guide, lacking vision (both physically and spiritually) cannot lead a dependent person anywhere. Both are doomed to fall into danger.

If the question is meant to make us look at ourselves, at the quality of Christian witness we give to others or the advice we provide, it is saying we ought to do serious self examination. Are we sighted enough spiritually to lead others, or are we in need of guidance ourselves?

Examine our guides. Do they encourage love without discrimination or conditions? Do they promote the common good? Are they sincere in their devotions and love for God? Examine ourselves. Are we walking truly with God?
