‘Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you’
Luke 6: 27-38
As is so often the case, Jesus upturns thinking and attitude in one statement.
As I reflect on the news from the Middle East and Ukraine, Sudan and even here in our own country, I think – ‘Imagine if we were to take Jesus’ statement to heart!’
The amazing thing is so often these wars are done in the name of God, and perceived God’s entitlement.
And here is Jesus giving us God’s commandment to love our enemies and to do good to those who hate us, and yet we do not hear.
So often world leaders, and we followers, present what we are talking about from a position of God’s righteousness, yet we fail to hear what we do not want to hear.
I think of Jesus’ words: ‘For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears. Otherwise, they might … understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ Matt 13:15
