The value of fasting is it serves as a means to draw closer to Jesus, to purify our hearts, and to conform our lives to His way and teaching.
Luke 5: 33 – 39
In today’s Gospel Jesus addresses the practice of fasting. The Pharisees and the disciples of John the Baptist fasted frequently as a sign of piety and devotion. When questioned about why His disciples did not fast, Jesus responded while the bridegroom is with them the attendants are not expected to fast. He referred to Himself as the bridegroom.
Fasting is a discipline that helps us to detach from things, comforts, and habits in order to focus on spiritual growth. It is a way to humble ourselves before God, acknowledge our dependence on Him, and seek Him more earnestly. Fasting also helps us to develop self-control, a virtue that strengthens our character and helps us resist temptations.
The value of fasting is it serves as a means to draw closer to Jesus, to purify our hearts, and to conform our lives to His way and teaching. Embrace fasting, not as a burdensome obligation, but as a joyful opportunity to grow in holiness and intimacy with our Lord.
