Fr Tony’ dies three weeks after celebrating golden jubilee

Fr Anthony ‘Tony’ D’Souza SJ passed away Monday, August 12, just three weeks after celebrating both the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood, and his 87th birthday.

Fr Tony, who was originally from India, was born July 23, 1937. He was ordained to the priesthood July 20, 1974, and faithfully served the Georgetown diocese for over 40 years.

His Funeral Mass was held Thursday, August 15—the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary—at St John the Baptist Church, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, his parish of many years, and where his Golden Jubilee Mass was celebrated July 21.

Bishop Francis Alleyne OSB was the chief celebrant with several priests concelebrating. His burial took place in the St John the Baptist Church Cemetery. Fr Tony will be remembered as a prayerful and humble priest who gently led those he served to God.
