The Alpha Pan Pioneers Steel Orchestra from St Joseph RC, Scarborough participated in the preliminary round of the ‘Pan is More Beautiful’ National Steelband Music Festival on August 5. Their spirited performance of ‘Oil and Music’ by Machel Montano and David Rudder, the designated piece for the ensemble category, engaged the audience and encouraged them to dance along.
In their selected piece, ‘Waltz of the Flowers’, the band effectively highlighted the song’s intricate dynamic and melodic variations. One musician remarked that mastering these complexities required an in-depth analysis of the score, but the effort proved to be highly rewarding.
After a brief and heartfelt prayer huddle, the band gathered their thoughts and approached the stage with a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation, fully prepared to showcase the results of their hard-earned rehearsals and dedication over the past weeks.
Among the audience were many supportive parishioners who had come out to support the band’s musical pursuits. Despite the challenges they had faced in the past, both the musical director, Keishaun Julien, and the band captain were genuinely pleased with the performance that was about to unfold before them. Keishaun took his position at the front of the stage, diligently conducting the band with confidence and passion, ensuring that each note resonated with the audience.
Meanwhile, Marina Marfan, an incredibly talented musician, delivered a captivating solo on the Double Seconds, showcasing her skills and artistry. After the performance concluded, Marina took a moment to reflect on her experience. She admitted feeling a surge of nerves regarding her solo, acknowledging the pressure that comes with performing in front of an audience.
However, she was also thrilled and relieved that everything went according to plan, leading to a successful and memorable performance that left both the band and the audience in high spirits.
