St Bernard, Abbot, Doctor
“Everyone…will be repaid a hundred times over, and also inherit eternal life.”
Matthew 19:23-30
Confession: I often fantasize about winning the lotto. I imagine all the really great things I would do with that money, how my family, friends and my church would benefit from my win. And I try to coax God – Lord, I’m already pretty good at giving with my limited resources; I could do so much more with much more. Huh! I suspect that, as a disciple, I am not alone in this well-intentioned but misguided fantasy.
“What about us?” Peter asks Jesus today. “What are we to have, we who have left everything to follow you?” What we have is the divine promise of God’s providence. Not only will he provide all our needs here on earth, but if we follow him faithfully, he will grant us the ultimate jackpot – Eternal Life.
No matter what life throws at me, I have never truly been in want. God does indeed provide all my needs. I’m sure many of you can testify to the same. We may not be lotto millionaires, but we are rich beyond measure. God is with us!
