Friday August 16th: God, source and companion

“So then, what God has united, human beings must not divide.”

Matthew 19: 3 – 12

Today Jesus reminds us that marriage is not merely a human contract but a divine covenant. In the sacred union of marriage, two individuals become one flesh, joined by God in a lifelong, indissoluble bond.

Jesus acknowledges that Moses permitted divorce due to the hardness of human hearts, but He emphasizes that this was not the original intention of God. The concession to divorce was a reflection of human weakness. Despite the difficulties, Jesus challenges us to uphold the ideals of marriage as a lifelong commitment, a holy union that mirrors the faithful love of God for His people.

Jesus is demanding, but He also recognises that not everyone can live these demands save those who are called to it, thereby making marriage a vocation which some can embrace and others not.

As a vocation, marriage requires grace, perseverance and commitment, all of which God gives in abundance to those who are open to His guidance. Marriage is not about the couple; it is about the couple with God as their source and companion
