‘Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.’
Matthew 18:1-5,10,12-14
I often hear people talking about how humble they are despite all that they have, and I wonder what that really means. The dictionary defines humility as the feeling or attitude that you have no special importance that makes you better than others; it is a lack of pride.
Jesus taught us that to serve well we must be humble. I believe it calls me to put myself in other people’s shoes, knowing that we are all God’s children. In the same way, I need God’s love and forgiveness, I should also want that for others and be willing to be of humble service.
Concluding his General Audience cycle of catecheses on the virtues, Pope Francis stated “Whereas pride and arrogance swell the human heart, making us appear to be more than we are, humility restores everything to its correct dimension.” It is key to Christian life and helps bring peace to the world and harmony in the Church.
Lord, give me a humble heart so that I can serve you and others with humility.
