SVP St Ann’s fun run/walk in Botanic Gardens

On Saturday, July 13, the St Ann’s conference of the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) held an inaugural Fun Run and Walk fundraiser in the community. It was the first time that an event of this kind used the Royal Botanic Gardens, which provided a scenic and picturesque backdrop to what was a well-attended and supported event.

Just over 100 participants signed up, with the majority attending on the day. Despite the inclement weather the day before, the sun came out gloriously on Saturday morning. Several participants brought their pets along for the fun—including a very sociable parrot. Even a squirrel came out to cheer in the Gardens.

It was a great example of people coming out for a good cause and a wonderful display of the power of community. As many neighbourhoods and districts struggle with crime and unemployment, an event such as this shows how people can still come together for the benefit of others.

The main lesson learned is that many blessings flow, even in the face of obstacles. The organising committee faced many challenges but were able to persevere in faith. All were rewarded with a wonderful event, where neighbours got a chance to meet each other and build a stronger community. We are definitely better together.
