Spot Reduction Faith

By Daniel Francis

Have you ever seen those commercials or videos about products that promise to burn belly fat? I find it bizarre that we still witness content like that in 2024. These videos or products typically promise that this tea, this item, or even doing this specific exercise can cause spot reduction: fat loss in a specific area of your body, for example, your stomach. However, no exercise or product can help you lose fat in a specific portion of your body. Our bodies simply do not work like that. It is through consistent exercise, proper dieting, and a host of other contributing factors that come together to produce overall fat loss. This fat loss is spread around the entire body and cannot be targeted to one specific area. It has been made clear that being in a calorie deficit is the way that you steadily burn fat over time.

I came across one of these spot reduction videos on social media and began to think. With all things, I ask myself if this has any faith angle. Clearly, there is one since you are reading this article. I have noticed, not only in others but in myself as well, that we sometimes spot reduce when it comes to our faith. We have periods where we don’t stick to the routines that ground us in our faith. We tell ourselves we are too busy or that we are going through something, yet these are all excuses. But in times of need, we still call on God to help us through that specific problem. We ask for guidance at that moment or to be liberated from this problem.

I felt guilty in these moments. Here I am praying for God’s help in my time of need, yet I have been neglecting my faith for weeks now. I have not prayed in forever, I have been missing church, not reading my Bible and not living a life that is befitting of a good Catholic. I am doing all the wrong things but in this moment of need, I pray for this one blessing. God is happy that we call on Him in that moment of prayer, but we have ignored or overlooked the overall work that we should be doing to experience a holistic faith-based life.

We spot reduce our faith in times of need when we should be living in faith every day. We are only human, so sometimes we need the reminder and the nudge. So, here’s that reminder and that nudge: your faith-based activities are important and necessary. They help with your overall spiritual development and connection with God. Let us not put our faith to the side and only call on God when we are in times of need. We are called to walk with God and take Him wherever we go. That means prioritising what keeps you close to Him. That means a daily confirmation of your devotion, love, and acceptance of God and His teachings. That means always calling on Him not only in times of need.
