A special Thanksgiving Mass for the Golden Jubilee of ordination to the priesthood of Fr Anthony (Tony) D’Souza SJ was celebrated at St John the Baptist Church, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, Sunday, July 21.
Parishioners from the East Coast parishes as well as many well-wishers from around the diocese participated in this momentous occasion to mark Fr Tony’s 50 years of service to God and the diocese.
Bishop Francis Alleyne OSB of Georgetown was the main celebrant, and the Mass was concelebrated by Fr Martin Lenk SJ, Provincial of the Caribbean province of Jesuits, and Frs John Lang SJ, Amar Bage SJ, and Stephen Selvanathan SJ.
After the Mass, many people took the opportunity to greet Fr Tony and thank him for his years of selfless and compassionate service to the faithful of Guyana, said a Catholic Standard report.
Fr Tony, who is originally from India, was ordained to the priesthood July 20, 1974, and has faithfully served the Georgetown diocese for over 40 years.
Fr Tony, known for his humility and compassionate nature, celebrated his 87th birthday Tuesday, July 23.
