“And he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.”
Matthew 13: 54 – 58
The people of Nazareth knew Jesus and therefore, they could not reconcile his wisdom and authority with His humble origins. Their familiarity with Him became a stumbling block to their faith.
The issue was the packaging. God came in the wrong package to the people of Nazareth. Isn’t that true for us as well, on so many occasions? God comes to us in the wrong package. So instead of taking God at face value, just as He is, we question and doubt because the way we expect God is not the way He appears or works.
Their lack of faith had consequences. Jesus could work no miracles there because of their unbelief. Consider that our faith is an invitation to God, giving Him the freedom to enter into our lives and do His will. And our lack of faith slams the door in God’s face. This passage challenges us to reflect on our attitude towards God and His freedom to work through us. Do we invite God in or shut Him out?
