Louis Moffet died July 27, 2023. Members of the Marriage Encounter Movement pay tribute.
We vividly remember sad moments in life and at times, it may shape the way we view life. When that sadness is due to the passing of a friend and mentor, it also brings to mind the joys and support that this individual has brought to your life. That is the impact of Louis Donald Moffet.
“As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Pt 4:10).
When you meet someone who has lived their life with this verse as their guiding light, it feels special that you have known that person. Louis Moffet was one such person.
Louis’ life impacted persons in his profession as a teacher for over 50 years and his church as a Eucharistic Minister, Catechist, and parishioner. He was also a committed member of the Marriage Encounter (ME) Movement of Trinidad and Tobago.
ME remembers
The ME community reflects on the one-year anniversary of Louis’ passing. Louis was a husband first, with 52 loving years with Ermine. The decision to love totally was their union’s foundation.
He always taught that no blessed marriage happens by guess; God always has a hand in your meeting. They believed their union was predestined by God.
A journey that lasted 52 years, their small starting has affected many lives, within the ME movement and outside of it.
They would discover shortly after their ME weekend that they had come there for a great deal more than making their marriage better. They were initiated into the Team Community and undertook the leadership role, not once, but on three occasions spanning the period 1987 to 2003 – over 20 years of unstinting commitment, unwavering devotion, and selfless generosity.
Their skill as teachers proved an asset in guiding team couples to write and deliver moving talks. It was life-giving to hear them share their journey through the challenges faced yet remained undaunted in their commitment and devotion to each other.
The genuine warmth and authenticity that they exuded was palpable. Louis with his warm brown eyes, full of life and Ermine with her infectious grin making you feel that you are not alone on this journey.
They led the Movement with kindness, love, and firmness that only a truly dedicated couple can portray.
Louis’ mentorship helped build all who sought after it, making you feel that you too can impact lives. He made us understand the joy of giving to others and that in vulnerability, you grow in love and understanding as couple.
On weekends with his guitar and famous stew chicken, he serenaded us with his melodious voice as we devoured the savoury dish. When Ermine joined him, their love shone even more brightly.
Their Love Circle
Outside of being active leaders of ME, they also shared their life and experience with other couples on the same journey. We remember the sincerity of their sharing. They became part of our Love Circle as mentor couple.
The journey with them was filled with commitment to grow each marriage. Their guidance helped to make the journey feel truly divine and Spirit-filled. Louis had a profound way of articulating his feelings as husband, lover, and friend to Ermine. His sense of humour made each feel secure and open to dialogue. Through the years we saw him as a loving husband, life-giving father and grandfather and a brilliant cook.
We pray that he is resting in peace in God’s comforting embrace, because in his Father’s house there are many rooms.
