‘Come away to some lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while.’
Mark 6: 30-34
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is concerned not only for his sheep but the shepherds he has sent out into the world to teach and to heal. These shepherds have gone far and wide and have done quite a lot. While they are full of enthusiasm, they are also physically hungry and tired.
Let us reflect upon the life of our own shepherds in this society, whether civil or religious, and let us pray for them. We have large crowds in our land who are dejected, broken, wounded and misguided and they are in serious and consistent need of direction and care. The Holy Day of the Lord’s Resurrection which transcends and supersedes the Sabbath, was instituted to set us free.
Let us pray that these shepherds may take the practical advice of Jesus and rest for a while. We pray that they may have time for themselves with the Lord, so that having their drooping bodies and spirits revived, they may be able to pour into the hearts of others, the healing and happiness of our Lord.
