Saturday July 20th: Jesus shows us another way

“He will not break a bruised reed or quench a smoldering wick until he brings justice to victory.”

Matthew 12: 14-21

If someone ever conspired against you then you must know how Jesus felt. Is our response the same as Jesus’? I know I wanted to lash back violently, to let them know and feel my wrath. This is how the ‘pharisees’ in history behave, leading to wars and violence. Note the genocide in Gaza, invasion of Ukraine, civil wars in Africa; human rights and climate violations globally – all motivated by self-interest, ego and injustice.

Jesus shows us another way; a gentle way; not bruising the reed; a way to fight for justice, without violence, continuing the work of the Father in a different space, curing and healing injustice in society not with wrangling and loud cries in the streets but with works of mercy, compassion, gentleness.

This path of non-violence and peace is long and unpopular and may lead to people conspiring and destroying us – like they did to Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King and the many environmental and human rights activists who peacefully oppose oppressive systems as Jesus did.

Lord, give us the conviction and strength to work for Justice and peace in our communities.
