Monday July 15th: Freedom

St Bonaventure, Bishop, Doctor

“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: it is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword”

Matthew 10:34 – 11:1

This passage concludes the instructions Jesus gave his twelve disciples as he sent them out to proclaim the good news. Freedom is at the heart of these instructions, and it calls for an openness to new possibilities.

One must understand that if we are true to ourselves and our mission as followers of Christ, we will make others uncomfortable: “… it is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword,” Jesus says. We will have to leave behind those things in our past that tend to keep us back. By doing so, we will be free enough to take up whatever challenges, whatever crosses, that come our way.

A sign that we are on the right path is evident when we show concern not for the highflyers but for the “little ones”, the vulnerable, the marginalized ones – for whom we are willing to give our very selves.
Lord, grant us the freedom to let go of our egos as we unreservedly give our lives over to you. Amen.
