Friday July 5th: A call to discipleship

“Jesus saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, ‘Follow me!’ And he got up and followed him.”

Matthew 9: 9 – 13

Our gospel today is the call of Matthew the tax collector. The first thing to note in the passage is Jesus took the initiative to call Matthew to discipleship. It is a reminder that our discipleship, our vocation, our ministry, our prayer life is Jesus’ doing.

Being called by the Lord is a grace moment. It is a moment when the Lord sees potential in us, and He calls us to follow Him in the ways that we do. There are no pre-conditions or need for credentials and qualifications. It only requires a disposition to follow.

Matthew’s call makes us reflect on our own life and the ways Jesus is calling us to follow Him today. Are we ready and willing to respond with the same promptness and commitment as Matthew?

Today Matthew’s call teaches us that Jesus makes us worthy to follow Him. We simply need to recognise His voice and respond with a willing heart. Are we (you and I) ready to leave everything to follow the Lord today?
