“Do not be afraid; only have faith.”
Mark 5:21-43
At the heart of these stories, we encounter the name that has the power to breathe new life into us; that name is Jesus.
The woman and Jairus’ daughter are at opposite ends of the spectrum. The woman lived away from people, a reject and an outcast by society. Jairus’ daughter was in good social standing. She was loved and the village rallied around the family during her ordeal. Both situations projected much suffering and commotion and even death was present.
During our painful battles when all seem dead and impossible, Jesus hears and responds, “My beloved, your faith has restored you to health; go in peace, be free from your complaint, do not be afraid; only have faith.”
These words are a beacon of hope when we are plagued by all kinds of ills, when fright consumes us, and trembling seizes us. Jesus is never out of timing. In his time, he bestows upon us more than we are expecting. Jesus is easily accessible regardless of who we are or whatever “deaths” we may be experiencing in our lives. “Do not be afraid; only have faith.”
