Confirmation for three candidates in Tobago

Receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation is one of the most important milestones in the life of a Catholic. It marks a moment when a community of believers can experience what the apostles received on Pentecost day: an outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

On Saturday, June 15, 2024, three candidates from the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) programme were confirmed by Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon at St Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Tobago. The Confirmation took place during the celebration of Holy Mass on the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time, with Fr Leslie Tang Kai and Fr Mathias Mulumba concelebrating.

During the Mass, Archbishop Gordon encouraged the three women being confirmed to continue their journey in the faith, reminding them not to be discouraged by ages. The women listened intently to Archbishop Gordon’s words and presented themselves to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

In the homily, Archbishop Gordon provided words of wisdom to the congregation, encouraging those present to take the opportunity to “plant” seeds of faith regardless of how insignificant the act may seem.  Reflecting on the parable of the planting of the “mustard seed” (Mk 4: 35-41), he explained that even though the mustard seed is relatively small, when it grows, it grows abundantly. This illustrates the importance of starting the faith journey, as even the tiniest amount of faith can be exactly what God needs to work through an individual person.

The Confirmation class was urged to take note of the message shared.  In fact, this event served as meaningful preparation and inspiration for these candidates. Not only did the event mark a significant spiritual milestone for the RCIA candidates, but it also strengthened the faith and unity of the entire parish community as parishioners congratulated the newly confirmed, and after Mass gathered in the parish hall to share food and drinks. –Gabrielia Sooklal
