Thursday June 20th: God is our Father

“So, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be held holy.”

Matthew 6:7-15

In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches his disciples ‘how to pray’. He taught them the same prayer he himself prayed; what we, God’s children, refer to as the ‘Lord’s Prayer’. What a powerful prayer! All the lengthy prayers we pray daily are summed up in it.

The truth is, our Father knows all about us, but the prayer helps us to discover more who we are and how to live as His true children; and of course, to experience brotherhood and sisterhood with one another.

It also brings us to a deep realization of our needs, not our wants, and our total dependence on this Father of us all. We also have our part to play and affirm our relationship with him, with all his children especially with those around us and in general with all of creation.

Lord, teach us, every time we call you ‘Our Father’ to be conscious that you are indeed Father to everyone and to look out for our brothers and sisters who are most in need of our care. Amen.
