Wednesday June 19th: All for God’s glory!

“Be careful not to parade your uprightness in public to attract attention.”

Matthew 6: 1-6, 16-18

Today we are reminded that between the left hand and the right there is the heart. It is here that good deeds originate, and so there is no need to seek public acclaim because God knows our heart and rewards accordingly. And so too, genuine prayer coming from that secret place, the heart, connects with God who knows and sees all.
Our current social climate seems to dictate that everything we do is deserving of a post, sometimes suggesting that public validation is needed. Every ‘like’ I can tally and every ‘follower’ I have, count. Such is the way of the world!
In our spiritual journey, public witness is important for evangelization and the building of the kingdom and must be encouraged. However, when it draws attention to self rather than ascribes honour and glory to God, it is akin to the public display of the scribes and Pharisees referenced in today’s Gospel.
Lord, I pray that I may decrease, and you increase. Jesus, meek and humble of heart make my heart like yours. Amen.
