Mercy Wings centre for youth closes, foundation to open

GUYANA

The Sisters of Mercy, Board of Directors, and Management and Staff of the Mercy Wings Vocational Centre announced Thursday, June 13 via the Mercy Wings Facebook page that the Centre will be closing June 30 after providing 24 years of skills education.

The Mercy Wings Vocational and Day Care Centre, located in South Sophia, Georgetown, was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in January 2000 to provide school leavers aged 16 and over with the education and life skills needed to make a meaningful contribution to their communities and the wider society.

According to a Catholic Standard report, the statement said that it had been a privilege to provide young people of Sophia and its environs with skills that allowed them to be productive citizens of Guyana.

Gratitude was expressed to the Sophia community, local and overseas organisations and individuals who have supported the programme through the years.

It further said that though saddened by the decision [to close the Vocational Centre], it was recognised that it was time to move in a different direction and announced the formation of the Mercy Wings Academic Foundation.

The Academic Foundation will be launched in September.
