Jesus’ words are a call to purity, not just in our external actions, but in our desires and intentions.
Matthew 5: 27 – 32
Today’s gospel passage challenges us to a higher standard of love, integrity and faithfulness.
Firstly, Jesus speaks about adultery, a sin not just of the flesh but of the heart. The commandment says we must not commit adultery, a sin of the flesh, and Jesus adds, we must not look at another lustfully either, a sin of the heart.
Jesus’ words are a call to purity, not just in our external actions, but in our desires and intentions. Jesus directs us to guard our thoughts and desires, recognizing that they have the power to lead us astray.
Secondly, Jesus speaks on divorce, emphasizing the sacredness and permanence of marriage. He says, “Whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery.”
In a world where marriages are fragile and easily discarded, Jesus’s words are a reminder of the seriousness of the commitment we make to each other in marriage. He calls us to honour that commitment, to cherish and nurture the bond between husband and wife.
