Thursday June 13th: Spiritual Blind spots

St. Anthony of Padua, Priest, Doctor.

“If your uprightness does not surpass that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5: 20 – 26

In today’s Gospel, Jesus extends the definition of ‘murder’ to include anger against someone or vice versa, to remind us that as followers and believers in Christ, we must go deeper as we seek holiness. We also see in Matt 19:16-22, that Jesus advises the rich young man who followed all the commandments, “to check his blind spots”, let go of his riches, and give to the poor. And in Matt 22:39 Jesus underscored the importance of loving neighbour in the second-greatest commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Are there persons in our “blind spot”, and so we have not come to accept that there is forgiveness we must give or seek, to truly grow in faith? Do we exclude them from our prayer because we consider them hopeless? According to Matthew Kelly, how do we create holy moments in these situations?
Lord, thank you for challenging me to go deeper to understand how I am called to love. St Anthony, intercede for me so that I may find the blind spots that hinder my spiritual growth.
