Wednesday June 12th: Building on the past

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

Matthew 5:17-19

Taking care of my aging mother, we often reminisce of old times.

As I read today’s Gospel, I think of how quick we are to dismiss the past in our headlong rush of new technology. We are apt to think the past is no longer relevant. As my reflection on old days with mummy has taught me, the life lessons we gather along our journey are as relevant today as they were then.

I realize it was also the same in Jesus’ time. He had to inform His followers that he was building on the past not tearing it down. This declaration of Jesus is crucial for understanding the continuity between the Old and New Testaments. Jesus is not rejecting the scriptures; rather, He is bringing them to their intended completion.

This makes me appreciate the enormous wealth of knowledge, of how we must live, that we hold in our hands whenever we take up the Bible to read.

Blessed Bible reading!
