Feast of St Barnabas, Apostle and Martyr
“You are the salt of the earth …and…the light of the world.”
Matthew 5: 13-16
What a call to discipleship! What a clear and distinct call! To be salt and to be light means that we are called to make a positive difference, wherever we are.
Salt gives taste to otherwise bland food; salt enhances flavour to whatever it is added. Simultaneously, too much salt can also quickly distort the anticipated satisfaction that the food is meant to give. We therefore must find just that right balance, so that we give just enough saltiness to make things palatable and satisfying.
Being light to the world means that we remove the hopelessness of despair as we shine forth the light of Jesus Himself into every place that we go and into every heart that we touch.
May the Lord penetrate and possess our being so entirely that our lives may always spread God’s loving fragrance everywhere we are.
