Solemnity of The Sacred Heart of Jesus.
“ One of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water.”
John 19: 31 – 37
It is perhaps a happy coincidence that this year (Year B) the Gospel for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is taken from the crucifixion scene from John’s Gospel. At the heart of the narrative is Jesus’ heart being pierced with a lance with blood and water flowing out immediately.
The passage reminds us that Jesus’ heart, was not only pierced by a physical lance, but also by our sins, by the pain and suffering of God’s people, by the rejection of His love and by the brokenness in the world. The blood and water flowing out from His pierced heart symbolises the unending love Jesus has for everyone.
There is so much similarity between the pierced heart of Jesus on the cross and the image of the Divine Mercy. The Divine Mercy image reminds us that the Lord’s love and compassion is always being poured out, always reaching out, always blessing and healing whomsoever and wheresoever love and compassion are needed. The heart of Jesus is truly our refuge.
