“They are no longer two, therefore, but one flesh.”
Mark 10: 1- 12
Today, Jesus reaffirms the sanctity and permanence of marriage, emphasizing God’s original intention for the marital union. When the Pharisees question Jesus about divorce, He directs their attention back to the beginning, quoting from Genesis where God establishes marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman. This divine institution is characterized by unity, intimacy, and mutual commitment — a bond so profound that it cannot be dissolved by human whim or desire.
Jesus condemns divorce because it inflicts tremendous harm upon individuals and families. He urges us to strive for reconciliation and forgiveness rather than opt for the dissolution of the marital bond. Divorce is a departure from God’s ideal and a violation of the sacred covenant between spouses.
What can we do today in service and celebration of marriage? We can reaffirm our commitment to the sanctity of marriage; cherish and nurture our own marital relationships; seek God’s grace and guidance when needed and show compassion and support to those who have been hurt by divorce.
