Pentecost
“When the Advocate comes…. he will be my witness.”
John 15: 26-27; 16:12-15
Jesus says that he has many things to say to us and that the Spirit of Truth will lead us to the complete truth. We desperately need truth in our families, communities, churches, society and the world. Things have gone terribly wrong because we have allowed self-indulgence to consume us. Today’s Gospel passage reminds us that we continually need direction from the Holy Spirit. Self-indulgence brings feuds, bad tempers, quarrels, gross indecency, disagreements and factions.
However, what the Spirit brings is very different. If we allow Jesus to continue to speak to us through His Gospel and His very Body which he presents for our consumption at the Eucharistic table to nourish us, then we will experience the complete truth of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-control. In the midst of our broken families, nation and world, we need an Advocate.
Let us thank God the Father for sending us the Spirit who continues to speak to us and draws us closer to God and each other through Christ the Son.
