Despite Peter’s past, Jesus sees beyond his mistakes to the potential and purpose that God has ordained for him.
John 21: 15 – 19
Today we witness the power of forgiveness, restoration, and commissioning. After Peter’s denial of Jesus, he must have been burdened by guilt and shame. Yet, Jesus does not rebuke him but instead offers him the opportunity to reaffirm his love and commitment.
To the three times Jesus asks Peter, “Do you love me?” he responds, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” And each time Jesus tells him: “Feed my lambs,” “Tend my sheep,” “Feed my sheep.” These commands go beyond mere words; they restore Peter to discipleship and responsibility.
Jesus not only forgives Peter but also reinstates him as a leader in the community of believers. Despite Peter’s past Jesus sees beyond his mistakes to the potential and purpose that God has ordained for him.
Moreover, Jesus prophesies about Peter’s future, foretelling the kind of death he would endure for the sake of the Gospel. This is a reminder that discipleship often requires sacrifice and suffering. Yet, Peter accepts this calling, aware that following Jesus includes both joys and challenges.
