Lochmaben RC students tour US military helicopters

In an extraordinary opportunity facilitated by the US Embassy, students from Lochmaben RC Primary together with other schools of the Cedros zone were invited to experience the world of aviation, courtesy a tour of Delaware National Guard helicopters on May 7.

As the roar of the helicopters filled the air signalling the arrival of the US Ambassador Candace Bond, Major General Michael Berry and their contingent immediately captured the attention and imagination of every student present.  After the dust settled the students of Lochmaben RC accompanied by their Principal, Beverley Findley-Hamilton, teachers, and ancillary staff enthusiastically welcomed the contingent to the community of Cedros.

The children were then briefed on safety guidelines, after which they were separated into two groups and taken on a tour to explore the interiors of the helicopters.

They were allowed to view all areas of the aircraft from the cockpit, where pilots navigate with precision, to the spacious cargo areas, where vital equipment is transported. They gained a newfound appreciation for the complexities of military aviation.

However, the tour was not merely about marvelling at the machinery; it was also about understanding the human element behind it. General Berry and his crew graciously took the time to speak with the students and share their personal experiences and insights.

For many students, this encounter with General Berry and his team was not just an educational outing but a source of inspiration, broadening horizons, and igniting passions.

Not only did the tour provide an educational opportunity for the students, but it also served as a moment of community pride, with parents witnessing firsthand the engagement and enthusiasm of their children in such a unique and enriching experience.

It serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and the value of authentic learning experiences in shaping young minds and fostering a sense of civic responsibility. —Lochmaben RC
