May 1st: The Worker

St. Joseph, the Worker

This is the carpenter’s son, surely?

Matthew 13: 54 – 58

In his encyclical Laborem Exercens, Pope John Paul II stated: “the Church considers it her task always to call attention to the dignity and rights of those who work, …”

Today we celebrate St Joseph, the worker intended to coincide with International Workers’ Day.

While little is known about the life of St. Joseph, for the people in Jesus’ hometown to reference “This is the carpenter’s son, surely?” must mean that Joseph was a well-established tradesman of his time.

St. Joseph is believed to have found contentment in his work because it was an instrument to support his family.

Prayer for the Spirit of Work

God our Father, Creator and Ruler of the universe, in every age you call us to use and develop our gifts for the good of others. With St. Joseph as our guide, help us to do the work you have asked and come to the rewards you have promised. Please grant this through Christ our Lord.
