Collection for Haiti

Catholic faithful are encouraged to give generously at the second collection for Haiti in all parish churches and faith communities this Sunday.

During Mass at Archbishop’s Chapel on March 22, Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon announced the collection would take place during Eastertide.

“This is an urgent corporal work of mercy,” said Vicar General Fr Martin Sirju.

The situation in Haiti is dire with violent gangs taking control of the capital Port-au-Prince and about 4,000 inmates roaming the streets after the gangs attacked the main prison in the capital and set them free.

He said the Haitian people have no place to go and even in the face of an almost total collapse of law and order, they must still venture out to make a living and look after their families.

Fr Sirju said Catholics can show support for the people of Haiti through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The funds collected will be sent to the Haitian Bishops’ Conference “to ensure that all donations will reach those most in need as their society teeters on the brink of collapse.”
