“When we believe our spiritual hearing improves.”
John 10:22-30
Have you ever had the experience of telling someone the same thing over and over again and yet they never seem to get it? They never hear, they don’t understand. This is the situation Jesus is encountering with the Jews. You can practically hear his exasperation as once again he faces their constant demands for him to prove his identity. They practically accost him – ‘If you are the Christ, tell us plainly’. In exasperation he retorts, ‘I have told you; I have shown you, but still, you do not believe.’
Here’s the heart of the matter – they do not believe, because they do not belong. Jesus is not their Lord and God. He is not their Shepherd, and they are not part of his flock. But glory alleluia, we are.
Believing is a natural consequence of belonging. When we belong, our spiritual hearing improves. When we listen, we can more easily identify the voice of the Saviour, and we can follow as he leads us to eternal life.
