“I am the bread of life.”
John 6:35 – 40
John Chapter 6 is known as the Bread of Life discourse. John’s Gospel was the last to be written and is not one of the Synoptic Gospels, instead it is a revelation Gospel. Notice all the ‘I am….’ statements about Jesus are in this Gospel. It reveals who Jesus really is.
Today we hear about Jesus being the Bread of Life come down from heaven to save us. To inherit eternal life, we need to be in full union with Jesus. This cannot be accomplished by human effort hence Jesus gave us Himself as food. When we eat Jesus, we would have his life in us; that is our Holy communion which extends to all in communion with Jesus. Am I in communion with Jesus trusting in His grace to save me? Our rituals should never be empty but nourishing and sustaining our journey through Christ to eternal life.
Lord Jesus, thank you for giving me yourself as food for the journey. I entrust myself to you to save me. Bring me to eternal life. Amen.
