“Woman why are you crying?”
John 20:11-18
Today’s Gospel passage highlights Mary Magdalene’s love and compassion for Jesus. We can just imagine her deep fear and expression of loss on the death and burial of Christ. We can also imagine the many times she must have cried then.
It is no wonder she set out to visit His tomb. We can also imagine the emotional fear and anxiety as she stood outside the tomb, crying prepared only to peep inside while she wept. Let us further imagine the way she must have felt when there was no sight of the Lord, just two men seated where the body had been. Seeing her state, the angels asked, “Woman why are you crying?”
What can we learn from Mary’s experience? I think about when we sin and turn away from the will of God. The tears this time are not from us but from He who loves and cares for us. The angels will not ask why the tears but will state, ‘Lord, we will intercede for their return to you.’
Let us pray to love the Lord as Mary did.
