“It is better that one man should die for the people …”
John 11: 45-56
Do you remember a time in your life when you allowed fear to prevent you from doing what was right? Or did you by your responses thwart policies which would have been of benefit to those most in need? If we look closely, we will see that almost always jealousy is at the root of these behaviours.
The authorities found that Jesus was becoming too popular among the people. He had been doing many good deeds. Instead of the authorities embracing him and being happy for the hope he brought to the lives of the marginalised, they conspired to kill him.
Jesus was upsetting the status quo and jealousy metastasized to envy! Jesus sought to give life. His enemies sought to take his life. It was the raising of Lazarus from the dead that cemented Caiaphas’ decision: “It is better that one man should die for the people …”
As we approach Holy Week, may God grant us the graces to be life givers not life takers in any situation.
