Friday March 22nd: Drop the stone!

“I have shown you many good works from my Father; for which of these are you stoning me?”

John 10: 31 – 42

The Jews fetched stones to stone Him. The Jews were always ready to put Jesus on trial and they often sentenced Him. On this occasion they accused Him of blasphemy, and for that they were ready to throw the first stone.

Have we noticed how easily we make judgements of others and are ready to throw the first stone? We are not that different from the Jews who fetched stones to stone Jesus.

This Lenten season challenges our readiness to stone others. The Jews were ready to stone Jesus for blasphemy though He made a truthful claim. Why are we ready to stone others? Perhaps we pass judgment easily, we are intolerant of those who are different from us or do we simply enjoy stoning others.

Lent invites us to put down the stones. We can learn to accept instead of reject, understand instead of judge, welcome instead of dismiss. Stones represent the hostilities we do not want in our lives or in our relationships. Decide today to drop all the stones.
