“Would the Christ be from Galilee? … Prophets do not come out of Galilee”.
John 7: 40-53
Prejudice can cause us to look at others through distorted lenses. The Pharisees and Scribes had already made up their minds about Jesus and his parentage. They had even sent their officers to arrest him since, to them, he was causing a disturbance.
They dismissed the people’s claim that Jesus must be a prophet or the Christ. As far as they were concerned Jesus was an upstart from Galilee. Little did they know that Jesus was from the line of David and was born in Bethlehem – their two criteria for judging Messiahship.
We too fall into the trap of pre-judging others. We, like the Scribes and the Pharisees, hold on to our age-old prejudices. Since someone came from a certain family, or tribe or community we often refuse to take them seriously. They could have nothing good to tell us and so we shut our minds from learning anything from them.
Forgive us Father, for harbouring prejudices. Give us a welcoming heart filled with love, acceptance and gratitude. Amen.
