St Peter’s RC addresses leaking sewer

A sewer leak was detected at the St Peter’s (Pt Cumana) RC March 3 and reported to the Ministry of Education (MoE).

The leak has “worsened” and the stench is “intense”, as Chief Executive Officer of the Catholic Education Board of Management (CEBM) Sharon Mangroo told The Catholic News Thursday, March 14.

Students have been advised not to drink water from the taps and to use hand sanitiser after washing their hands.

Several students, Mangroo said, have complained of “tummy aches”.

The teachers submitted a “refusal to work” notice that day.

Mangroo told The Catholic News she was advised March 14 by Wayne Cupid, Education Facilities Planning & Procurement Division (EFPPD) Director in the MoE that approval was sent to MTS that Thursday to undertake sewer works.

“It is expected that the work be completed over the weekend,” she said.

Mangroo mentioned the principal communicated with the parents Thursday night that the teachers would not be present today, Friday, March 15.

“The teachers stayed away. They had been holding on so that the SEA students would not miss too much school…. They only took action because it became unbearable,” Mangroo said.

She mentioned the teachers planned a fundraiser at the school today.

The SEA students have been accommodated at the church and the person who provides the School Nutrition meals is allowing them to use their premises for the fundraiser today, Mangroo said.
