Five Standard One students and two Infant One students from Las Lomas RC Primary School were sent home yesterday, Wednesday, March 13, after displaying rashes on their arms and necks.
A written report shared by Catholic Education Board of Management (CEBM) Chief Executive Officer Sharon Mangroo to The Catholic News said that the Acting Senior Teacher Primary contacted the parents of the seven students to pick them up and advised that the parents take the children for medical attention.
The Acting Senior Teacher Primary also notified the district nurse and sent photos of the students’ affected arms and necks and the contact numbers of their parents.
The district nurse stated that after consultation with the doctor, the rashes do not appear to be contagious.
“She also indicated that she (the district nurse) will contact the parents of the affected students to have the students brought into the Health Centre to obtain medical intervention.”
The Catholic News was informed there was no issue about students developing rashes at the school today, Thursday, March 14.
According to Mangroo, the school has been “troubled” by large numbers of pigeons. The problem of pigeons on the school building and in the ceilings at specific locations still exists. This, she told The Catholic News has been reported to the Ministry of Education and “MTS is currently engaged in the matter.”
Responding to concerns on whether the rash was caused by pigeons, Mangroo replied, “we have not been told the cause of the rashes.”
She continued, “While we suspect the pigeons may be culpable, there is no information yet from the medical authority.”
Mangroo further highlighted she has no information on the school being deemed unsafe.
She stressed if the Ministry of Health issues an instruction to close a school, it will be closed immediately.
The school is awaiting the intervention of the Ministry of Education to have the building pigeon proofed and conduct other necessary repairs. A Scope of Work was submitted from MTS and is still awaiting approval.
