Contrary to our Expectations…

Jesus is actually a little anxious and trepidatious approaching Galilee as, although he had changed water into wine there and even after ‘all that he had done at Jerusalem’, He knew His own people may still not respect Him. So much so, that when the court official approached Him, with faith, asking for his son to be healed, Jesus asked him whether it was only because of ‘the signs and portents’ he had seen or heard about.
The passage says ‘but’ on Jesus’ arrival the Galileans received him well. Jesus further realized, contrary to His expectations, that the court official had great faith, because, at Jesus’ word of healing, he ‘started on his way’ home and ‘while he was still on the journey’, word came to him that his son was healed.
When we are anxious about how persons will receive us and our talents and accomplishments, let us, like Jesus, remain open to a reality contrary to our expectations. Let us be open to the ‘but’ that changes our entire outlook!
