‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner.’
Luke 18: 9-14
Jesus ends his parable today with a memorable expression: Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the man who humbles himself will be exalted.
We notice that the Pharisee ‘prided himself on being virtuous.’ Many of us think that we are virtuous when we follow every Mass and devotion that we can attend. Jesus has warned us not to exalt ourselves. We are like the Pharisees when we like to be treated obsequiously.
We saw that the one who went home at rights with God was the humble tax collector. His humility reminds us of those in our community who are helpful to the poor and downtrodden. Pope Francis is such a person for he comforts the sick and helps refugees. Fr. Gerard Pantin was such a person as he reached out to the downtrodden with his SERVOL programme.
Lord, teach us to be humble and to treat our sisters and brothers with hospitality.
