“There is no commandment greater than this.”
Mark 12: 28 – 34
Today we have the beautiful exchange between a scribe and Jesus concerning the greatest commandment. The scribe asked Jesus, which is the greatest commandment, to which Jesus is responded by quoting the Shema: “Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength”. The second is this, “You must love your neighbour as yourself”.
When Jesus was finished a beautiful thing happened, the scribe agreed with Him. It is a wonderful thing when we can listen to Jesus and agree with His teaching and guidance. It means we see the value and truth in His words.
That is precisely what Jesus wants from all disciples; that we can listen to Him and obey. When we can do that, we show that we truly belong to Him, and are indeed the sheep of His flock. Let us make this Lenten season a time for renewing our commitment of obedience to the Lord.
