What we do to instil good habits and morals

Congratulations to Nataki Thompson, reigning Junior Calypso Monarch, for her thoughtful rendition of ‘Your Purpose’. While the words of her song were enough to have youths and adults pondering our purpose in life, at Dimanche Gras the portrayal enacted before and whilst she was singing was quite striking as well.

There, she began with chanting “bring back joy, bring back peace!” and then started her tune imploring all listeners to choose right from wrong, speaking directly to the crisis in morality in our society.

The first stanza of her masterpiece addressed parents’ delinquency in not providing good examples to their children. On stage was either a mother or a female young adult showing a young girl in a revealing, very short pair of shorts, whilst she herself was dressed in tight shorts and fishnet stockings.

Thompson’s Calypso questioned, “who is training our children?” and she spelled out that we have a “moral mandate” to instil good values in them.

It seemed the main goal of the enactment was to show Thompson handing over the ignited flame of “real love” to the actors. The first flame was given to the lady immodestly dressed, who then realised her error and put on a long dance skirt over her attire.

The second flame was handed to a young smoker and drinker liming on the block who ended this habit after receiving the flame. The skit ends with the actors happily dancing to Thompson’s tune after she upheld looking in the mirror to find in ourselves “patience and kindness” along with “peace, gentleness and meekness” and practising “self-control”, then they were happy to find their “purpose in life”.

This Calypso and portrayal highlighted the importance of good examples and teaching of young people. The Catechism of the Catholic Church #2221 noted: “The right and duty of parents to educate their children (to fulfil God’s law) are primordial (comes first) and inalienable (unable to be removed/taken away)”. Even though, “The role of parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute”.

At BOMA-TT, we want to support parents, guardians, and friends of young people to spread good habits for a positive future in T&T. We host programmes that assist with instilling good morals in young people, which are the ‘Is Love Forever?’ programme and the ‘Mother & Daughter Time’ programme.

In ‘Is Love Forever?’ we discuss:

  • the development of healthy attitudes towards sexuality and intimate relationships
  • the importance of delaying and/or reducing sexual activity
  • how to have lasting relationships
  • how to approach adulthood while developing physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects of being a human person
  • the inevitable outcomes of choices
  • the importance of saving sex for marriage

At ‘Mother & Daughter Time’, we get a conversation started regarding:

  • questions young women 9 to 17 years old have about puberty
  • mood changes
  • body image
  • lifestyle changes
  • the beauty of their bodies
  • fertility
  • waiting for a future spouse
  • the dignity of human life

Lastly, we would like to offer the Teen STAR® programme in the future, which:

  • is a developmental curriculum that helps adolescents and young adults come to terms with their emerging sexuality and fertility
  • assists them in making responsible decisions
  • beginning with the physical, the young person can then integrate their intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of their persona and mature into a fully integrated human being

If you are interested in offering any of these programmes to a group of young people, please contact us. We are also on the lookout for new presenters to whom we will provide supervised training.

Donations toward these initiatives are also welcome.

Let us work together for a positive, faith-filled, happy with “real love” T&T!
