“No prophet is accepted in his own country.”
Luke 4:24-30
Among the many things I recall from my mother’s teachings is ‘Always tell the truth, and it will set you free’. A wise lesson indeed. Is it that the Jews were not aware of this? I doubt it very much. Yet the people in the synagogue, when Jesus spoke the truth, ‘they rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill, to hurl him down headlong’. Or was it a case of if it was someone else unknown to them pointing out the facts, they would have readily accepted the truth?
Today’s Gospel clearly puts before us that no matter how challenging it may be, never be afraid to point out the truth. Secondly even if we know that a prophet is never accepted in his/her own country nevertheless let our thoughts be known. Its impact may not make an immediate difference but in time it will. As followers of Jesus this will be another way of taking up our cross to follow Him.
Almighty Father, help us always to speak truth.
