Friday February 23rd: The spirit of the law

“For I tell you, if your uprightness does not surpass that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of Heaven.”

Matthew 5: 20–26

Jesus challenges disciples today to ensure that their virtue is deep and meaningful. A good life ought to be based on more than just following the Law, it must also embody the spirit of the Law.

The passage speaks of not just avoiding wrongful acts but managing harmful emotions and feelings. While we may not have killed anyone with a weapon, we may have harboured ill will towards them. Harmful emotions and feelings can be subtle but just as destructive as wrongful acts. Jesus urges us to deal with our inner feelings quickly.

Here are some practical steps for this Lenten season: take time to reflect on our attitudes and emotions. Are there seeds of anger or resentment growing within us? Make reconciliation a priority. Seek forgiveness where needed and extend forgiveness to those who have wronged us. Do not delay in addressing conflicts. Swift action prevents the escalation of issues and demonstrates a commitment to peace. Above all, approach the process with humility and a genuine desire for virtuous living.
