SSVP Penal celebrates 60 years of service

The parish of St Dominic’s RC Church, Penal was alive from the January 28 to February 4 as the community came out to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Society of St Vincent De Paul (SSVP) Penal Conference.

The Penal Conference, founded in 1964, began its diamond jubilee celebrations with Holy Mass at the church with parish priest Fr Robert Christo as celebrant. Penal Conference President, Micheal Phillip brought greetings on behalf of the Trinidad and Tobago General Council and the SSVP Our Lady of Perpetual Help San Fernando Conference.

The Conference took the opportunity to recognise those who continue to give to the Penal community. Special mention was made of four members who in the past and present steadfastly give to the wider community through the SSVP: McDonald Bedeau, Angela Gill (both posthumous), Lynette Fraser and Pearl Kirton for their long-standing service.

On February 4, the parish community was abuzz with a Health Outreach which was held in the church carpark from 11 a.m.  There were immunisation, diabetes, hypertension, and other wellness checks performed by the South-West Regional Health Authority Wellness Team.

There were also hampers, a used-clothing drive, a mini-Bingo fundraiser and light food items on sale. At midday, there was an Aerobics and Zumba burnout which was led by Alice Martin.

Special thanks to Martin, Mr Daniel, Mr Thompson, MS Foodcity Supermarket, Debe and Persad’s Wholesalers, Princes Town for their considerable support and contribution to activities. –A member of the SSVP Penal Conference
