The Children of God (COG) group, a vibrant, faith-based community initiative, proudly celebrated its 20th anniversary, a milestone that commemorates two decades of spiritual growth and community service.
Founded on April 18, 1999, at St Philip and St James Church in Chaguanas, the group has flourished under the guidance and support of Fr Urban Hudlin OP, the parish priest at the time of its inception.
Patricia Maynard, COG Coordinator, has been instrumental in the group’s expansion, which saw the establishment of a new branch in the Uganda Martyrs, Longdenville community on February 8, 2004. This expansion was led by Pam Lewis who has been pivotal in steering the group towards new horizons.
The Longdenville COG offers a structured programme for children and young people, divided into three main categories: Pre-First Communion (ages 5–7); First Communion (ages 7–12); and post-Communion (ages 8–16) with classes held Sundays 3–5 p.m.
The initiative also includes the COG Dancers (The Light) and the COG Choir, which provided a platform for spiritual expression through dance and music from 2004 to 2016, and 2005 to 2021, respectively.
Over the years, the group has visited various parishes supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who have contributed as mentors, prayer partners, catechists, choir leads, and facilitators for a wide range of activities. These activities include rosary-making, craft sessions, parent faith-building sessions, and retreats.
COG members enjoy a rich tapestry of experiences, from participating in youth Masses to engaging in craft time, forming friendships, and enjoying games days. A key focus of the group is to nurture the holistic development of its members, fostering a sense of belonging and offering opportunities for them to share their talents and skills.
This is achieved by involving them in various parish ministries and holding a Youth Mass on the first Saturday of every month during the school term. As the COG looks forward to continuing its mission, it remains committed to its founding principles of faith, community, and the holistic development of youth.
A warm invitation is extended to all who wish to learn more about the group or to join in their activities.
